Choosing mattress firmness for side, back and stomach sleeping

By Angel Sleep · Reviewed by Dr. Mark Yezak, DC · Updated

Short answer: there is no single right firmness. As a general rule, side sleepers often prefer a softer surface, back sleepers a medium to medium-firm feel, and stomach sleepers a firmer one. The Angel Bed is medium-firm, 6 to 7 out of 10, and sleeps soft, 9 to 10, with the comfort topper.

How firmness scales work

Angel Sleep uses a 10-point scale where higher numbers mean firmer, except where we say "on softness". Other brands use their own scales, so compare by lying on a bed rather than by number alone.

Side sleepers

When you sleep on your side, your shoulder and hip carry most of your weight. Many side sleepers like a surface that lets them sink in a little there. If that sounds like you, the Angel Bed with the topper is the place to start.

Back sleepers

Back sleepers often like a medium to medium-firm feel that keeps the lower back supported. The Angel Bed on its own is a good fit for many back sleepers; add the topper if you want it softer.

Stomach sleepers

Stomach sleepers usually prefer a firmer surface so the hips do not sink. The Angel Bed without the topper is the better match.

Combination sleepers

If you change positions through the night, choose for the position you spend most time in, and consider how easy it is to turn over. Responsive latex and micro-coils in the CloudLift layers help the bed bounce back as you move.

Your pillow matters too

Firmness is only part of it. A pillow that fills the space between your head and the mattress for your position matters as much. The Angel Pillow is shaped for back, side and stomach sleepers.
